AP Biology
Course Overview:
AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course that explores the core principles of living systems. Students engage in inquiry-based investigations to develop scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. The course emphasizes understanding biological concepts, analyzing data, and applying scientific practices to real-world scenarios.(AP Central)
Course Content:
The AP Biology curriculum is structured around four Big Ideas:(College Board)
- Evolution: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
- Energetics: Biological systems utilize energy and molecular building blocks to grow, reproduce, and maintain homeostasis.
- Information Storage and Transmission: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.
- Systems Interactions: Biological systems interact, and these interactions possess complex properties.(College Board)
The course is divided into eight units:
- Chemistry of Life: Explores the chemical foundations of biology, including water properties, macromolecules, and enzymes.
- Cell Structure and Function: Examines cell components, membrane transport, and cell communication.
- Cellular Energetics: Covers photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and energy transfer.
- Cell Communication and Cell Cycle: Focuses on signal transduction pathways and the regulation of the cell cycle.
- Heredity: Investigates meiosis, inheritance patterns, and genetic diversity.
- Gene Expression and Regulation: Discusses DNA structure, gene expression, and biotechnology.
- Natural Selection: Analyzes evolutionary mechanisms and evidence supporting evolution.
- Ecology: Studies ecosystems, energy flow, and environmental interactions.
Exam Structure:
The AP Biology exam assesses students’ understanding through two sections:
- Section I: Multiple Choice (50%)
- 60 questions testing conceptual knowledge and application.
- Section II: Free Response (50%)
- 6 questions requiring in-depth analysis, including experimental design and data interpretation.
