TOEFL Test Preparation
Overview:
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a widely accepted standardized exam designed to measure English language proficiency among non-native speakers seeking admission to English-speaking universities. Administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), TOEFL scores are accepted by more than 11,000 institutions in over 160 countries, including universities in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia. TOEFL primarily assesses academic English skills used in classroom and campus settings. (ETS, Wikipedia)
Test Structure:
As of 2025, the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the most commonly used format and includes four sections:
- Reading (35 minutes):
o 2–3 academic passages followed by multiple-choice and vocabulary-based questions.
o Tests reading comprehension and inference abilities. - Listening (36 minutes):
o Audio recordings of lectures, conversations, and discussions with comprehension questions.
o Assesses ability to understand spoken English in academic contexts. (ETS) - Speaking (16 minutes):
o 4 tasks: 1 independent (opinion-based) and 3 integrated (using reading/listening input).
o Evaluates clarity, coherence, and pronunciation. - Writing (29 minutes):
o 2 tasks: 1 integrated (based on a passage and a lecture) and 1 independent essay.
o Tests organisation, argument development, and grammar.
The total testing time is approximately 2 hours, and the test is delivered online at official test centres or at home via TOEFL Home Edition.
