TEF Canada

TEF Canada Preparation

Overview:
The Test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF Canada) is an official French language proficiency test recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) for Quebec. It is required for applications for Canadian permanent residency, Express Entry, and citizenship. Administered by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce (CCI Paris), TEF Canada assesses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French and maps results to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Test Structure:
As of 2025, TEF Canada assesses the four mandatory language skills in the following format:

  1. Listening Comprehension (Compréhension orale) – 40 minutes:
    • 40 multiple-choice questions on everyday and workplace conversations.
    • Computer-based; tests understanding of spoken French in various accents.
  2. Reading Comprehension (Compréhension écrite) – 60 minutes:
    • 40 multiple-choice questions based on texts such as ads, instructions, and articles.
    • Evaluates ability to interpret written French in practical and professional contexts.
  3. Writing (Expression écrite) – 60 minutes:
    • 2 written tasks: formal/informal correspondence and an argumentative or descriptive text.
    • Tests spelling, grammar, structure, and ability to express ideas clearly.
  4. Speaking (Expression orale) – 15 minutes:
    • 2 face-to-face tasks with an examiner involving structured and spontaneous responses.
    • Measures fluency, pronunciation, coherence, and interactive communication skills.

Scoring:

  • Each section is scored on a scale that maps to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) from levels 1 to 12.
  • For Express Entry, candidates must typically reach CLB 7 or higher for full language points.
  • Example scores for CLB 7:
    • Listening: 249–279
    • Reading: 207–232
    • Writing: 310–348
    • Speaking: 310–348
  • Results are generally available within 4–6 weeks. (Canada.ca, CCI Paris)
