AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry

Course Overview:

AP Chemistry is a rigorous, college-level course that provides students with a deep understanding of chemical principles and the ability to apply these concepts to real-world scenarios. The course emphasizes inquiry-based learning and develops students’ skills in problem-solving, analytical thinking, and laboratory investigations. Topics covered include atomic structure, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and electrochemistry.

Course Content:

The AP Chemistry curriculum is organized into nine units:

  1. Atomic Structure and Properties (7%–9%)
    • Understanding atomic models, electron configurations, and periodic trends.
  2. Molecular and Ionic Compound Structure and Properties (7%–9%)
    • Exploring bonding types, molecular geometry, and intermolecular forces.
  3. Intermolecular Forces and Properties (18%–22%)
    • Investigating states of matter, solutions, and colligative properties.
  4. Chemical Reactions (7%–9%)
    • Studying reaction types, balancing equations, and stoichiometry.
  5. Kinetics (7%–9%)
    • Analyzing reaction rates, rate laws, and mechanisms.
  6. Thermodynamics (7%–9%)
    • Examining energy changes, enthalpy, and entropy in chemical processes.
  7. Equilibrium (7%–9%)
    • Understanding dynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier’s principle, and equilibrium constants.
  8. Acids and Bases (11%–15%)
    • Exploring acid-base theories, pH calculations, and titration curves.
  9. Applications of Thermodynamics (7%–9%)
    • Delving into electrochemistry, galvanic cells, and thermodynamic favorability.

Exam Structure:

The AP Chemistry exam assesses students’ understanding through two sections:

  • Section I: Multiple Choice (50%)
    • 60 questions testing conceptual knowledge and application.
  • Section II: Free Response (50%)
    • 7 questions requiring in-depth analysis, including problem-solving and experimental design.
