GRE Test Preparation

Overview:

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test widely used for admissions to graduate and business schools globally. It assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills—essential for success in rigorous academic programs. The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide.(ETS, Wikipedia)

Test Structure:

As of 2025, the GRE General Test is offered in a digital format and comprises three main sections:

  1. Analytical Writing (30 minutes):
    • One essay task requiring the test-taker to analyze an issue and articulate a coherent argument.
  2. Verbal Reasoning (41 minutes):
    • Two sections evaluating reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary usage.(Wikipedia)
  3. Quantitative Reasoning (47 minutes):
    • Two sections assessing problem-solving abilities, data interpretation, and basic mathematical concepts.

The total testing time is approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes. The test employs a section-level adaptive design, where the difficulty of the second section in each measure is based on performance in the first section.(Wikipedia)

Scoring:

  • Verbal Reasoning: Scored on a scale of 130–170 in 1-point increments.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Scored on a scale of 130–170 in 1-point increments.
  • Analytical Writing: Scored on a scale of 0–6 in half-point increments.(Wikipedia, The Princeton Review)

The total score for the GRE General Test ranges from 260 to 340, combining the Verbal and Quantitative scores. Analytical Writing is reported separately.(Kaplan Test Prep, ETS)
